There’s lots of mystery and even fear around the ancient and global practice of spell casting and magic (or, as I call it, Majik ~ for reasons I’ll share later). There has been lots of fear generated around it from those who wish to suppress it, as well as media and other individuals through time who’ve created distorted variations of it. This common human practice emerged from our ancient paleolithic roots and is woven into the very fabric of every culture, even modern cultures (although it’s often hidden and not associated with magic). Ultimately, the truth of it is, that we are constantly all spellcasting; most in the modern world just don’t realize it!

While traditions, meanings, and specifics vary from culture to culture, there are some core attributes that are universal.

  • The Emotional Charge for Change – Magic stems from an inner desire with emotions to create change in some form in our current experience of life. From something large like our personal wealth to something simple like changing our current mood. Desire and emotion are the catalysts to initiate change. We go from the form we are contained in to the desire to flow into something new. (Water)
  • Symbols  & Associations –  Physicalized elements that have meaning to us. They can be anything from colors, shapes, crystals, herbs, other things from nature (wood, shells, etc.), art, statues, oils, words/mantras, songs, etc. We apply specific meaning to these elements from either our own past or traditions given to us. Many cultures have developed specific meanings around specific elements and how they should be used. (Earth)
  • The Ceremony or Ritual Engagement – this is the “Casting of the spell.” The setting aside time to focus on the intention, desires, and application of the symbols to create the change. Here it is the prayer, the request, the creation of the art, the experiential participation. This also engages the body in some way through speech, movement, and focus. Here the symbolic items, symbols, and associations are implemented in a structured or intuited manner. They are the focal points of their associated energy.  This ignites the change, to burn/dissolve the current reality experience to allow something new to come to be. (Fire)
  • The Becoming & Allowing  – this is the part where we become witness to the effects, to see what happens and how the majik unfolds. (Air)

These four components are actually used throughout the modern world. Some common examples:

  • Advertising: Stimulate an emotional charge that you have some problem, and this company can fix it. They use colors/symbols/shapes/packaging to create the form that conveys the meaning of their product. The act or engagement is the advertisement itself that was created and is now shown to you (likely multiple times!). This could also include the process of the purchase. The allowing is once you’ve obtained the product/service to allow its effects to play out in your life.
  • Big Events (i.e. sports games/concerts) – Stimulate an emotional charge of excitement, fun, comradery, etc. Use of colors, rules, logos, lights, sounds, chants, slogans, etc. to create the symbols of the ritual. Act or engagement – the play itself, the game, the concert, the chanting, the sing-along, the outfits, the 4 quarters, etc. The allowing is the experience itself and the after-effects of talking about it with others, feeling the excitement of being part of it, the connection with others talking about the event, and the anticipation of the next one.
  • Making Coffee- Emotional Charge desire- wake up/energy. Usage of components coffee, hot water, sweetener, creams, spices. Act or engagement is drinking of the coffee (magical potion), allowing it to then wake you up and energize you. Fairly similar process with any cooking, especially those where there are set rituals/traditions for holidays.

These are just a few examples of many that are part of normal modern-day culture. In fact magical practices universal around the world were, over time assimilated and recoded by Christianity into their formulations with a different spin on them.

Magic is evil?

Everything you are doing really is the constant interplay of ritual and magic. The “darker” application of magic to manipulate others is actually a pretty common part of most people’s day to day. In fact, when you judge others or put down another (or, for example, the other team, the other group of people, or the other country) you invoke separation and your will over the will of another. You impose that who and what you are is somehow better than others, and you engage in manipulation, even if it’s unconsious. Usually, this is related to the underlying fear of not being enough or having enough for your own survival. As you might realize, this is pretty widespread human activity!

Of course, this can be taken further using more complex rituals in an attempt to manipulate others. Whether using magic rituals or cleverly designed marketing campaigns, slander campaigns, etc. All these forms obviously can be effective, but they cause entanglement and continue to repeat the patterns of disconnection and fulfillment as one continues to be dependent on another’s state of being for one’s own sense of well-being and wholeness.
